Our fondness of the great outdoors has resulted into a love affair with multi tools, but which is the Best Multi tool 2018? We see multi tools as an essential part of our daily lives such that we even consider them as an extension of us. We love to go on hiking and camping trips, and our multi tools serve us really well. So, if you’re searching for a nifty pocket tool that you can bring anywhere, we reviewed some of the best options you have around. Read on to know what these multi tools offer before you buy one.

Top Multi tools 2018

Leatherman Wave LT650

leatherman wave lt650 best multitool 2018

The Leatherman Wave LT650 is one of the premium multi tools around. In the Leatherman lineup, the Wave LT650 is considered as the top choice for Best Multi tool 2018. Out of the box, it offers 18 different tools that are quite useful especially if you frequently go on hiking and camping trips. We tested it out and here’s what we found out.

Compared to other Leatherman pocket tools, the Leatherman Wave LT650 comes with a more durable build. We held it and worked with it for quite a while, and we were impressed with its sturdier build. Although it is very close in size and weight with the Leatherman Wingman, the Leatherman Wave LT650 felt like it will last longer serving us in all our outdoor adventures. We’re not saying that the Wingman will break easily but we just feel it will take a lot to break the Wave LT650.

Speaking of the 18 tools that the Leatherman Wave LT650 offers, these include needle-nose pliers, regular pliers, premium replaceable wire cutters, premium replaceable hard-wire cutters, electrical crimper, wire stripper, 420HC knife, 420HC serrated knife, saw, spring-action scissors, ruler (8-inch/9-cm), can opener, bottle opener, wood/metal file, diamond-coated file, large bit driver, small bit driver, and medium screwdriver. On our hiking and camping trips, we had an amazing use for most of these tools.

At home, the tools like the pliers, wire cutters, crimper, and wire stripper were pretty useful to us. Since we often “do-it-yourself” with most repairs, these tools really help a lot. Instead of getting separate electrical tools, we can just pop them right out of the Leatherman Wave LT650.

Although the Leatherman Wave LT650 doesn’t have a pocket clip, we can still carry it via its high-quality nylon sheath. We simply attached it to our belt loop and we can easily get it whenever the need for it arises.

The Leatherman Wave LT650 is just 4 inches (10 cm) in length and it just weighs about 8.5 oz (241 g) so we still found it comfortable to use with one hand. We can simply pop it out of its nylon sheath and we can instantly start working with it.

Although the Leatherman Wave LT650 is compact and light in general, it is still a tad heavier compared to other Leatherman multi tools. However, it gives that heavy-duty feel when we held and use it, and we really liked that. Moreover, this multi tool gave off a vibe similar to the old Leatherman multi tools that were loved by many long, long ago, and that is something we really liked with the Leatherman Wave LT650. Overall, we are a big fan of this pocket tool.

Leatherman Charge

leatherman charge best multitools 2018

The Leatherman Charge is a premium multi tool that offers 19 tools, which is perfect for people who love the great outdoors or who enjoy being handymen in their own homes like us. These tools are neatly packed in a nice-looking pocket tool that is easy to carry anywhere. We were able to carry it with its leather sheath that is included in the box. The Leatherman Charge is always available on-hand with its quick release lanyard ring. We really found it easy to do any job since we can just grab it quickly from its leather sheath.

One thing we really liked with the Leatherman Charge is its Titanium handle. This build ensured that the pocket tool is ultra lightweight yet still durable enough to handle any task. Whether it is a huge task such as cutting ropes for tents when camping or stripping wires when fixing the washing machine at home, it was able to do the job effortlessly.

The Leatherman Charge offers tools including the needle-nose pliers, regular pliers, premium replaceable wire cutters, premium replaceable hard-wire cutters, electrical crimper, wire stripper, S30V knife, 420HC serrated knife, saw, spring-action scissors, cutting hook, ruler (8 -inch/9-cm), can opener, bottle opener, wood/metal file, diamond-coated file, large bit driver, small bit driver, and medium screwdriver. After seeing all these tools, we’ve already known that it is the perfect handyman pocket tool from the get-go.

We really liked that the Leatherman Charge comes with an S30V knife. This type of steel used for a knife is guaranteed to resist corrosion, which means that the knife has a longer life compared to other blades. Even when we got the pocket tool wet, we didn’t worry much about the blade of this knife corroding anytime soon.

Small and lightweight, we were able to use the Leatherman Charge comfortably even with just a single hand. Let’s face it, oftentimes when doing handyman work, we need one hand to spare. Since the Leatherman Charge can be used easily even with one hand, we have the other hand as support or to do other tasks to accomplish the main job quicker. We were also able to open the tools on this multi tool with a single hand. It was rare that we needed both hands to pop out a specific tool. Since the blades lock in place, we can cut through things without any worries.

Leatherman takes pride in their products and since it has been around for a long time, having a multi tool like the Leatherman Charge gives us peace of mind. Leatherman offers a 25-year limited warranty so if you’re looking into getting a pocket tool, this might be something worth considering.

Gerber Diesel

gerber diesel bestmultitools 2018

When we heard that the Gerber Diesel is a military grade multi tool, we just can’t wait to try it. For handymen like us who also enjoy outdoor trips, which require a trustworthy pocket tool, we had to see what the Gerber Diesel has to offer and if it can really withstand the harshest conditions to do the hardest jobs.

When we first held it in our hands, we instantly knew that the Gerber Diesel is not joking around. It is a bit bulky for its own good and a tad heavier than other pocket tools because it is extremely tough. We felt a lot more macho with this pocket tool. This pocket tool is constructed from industrial strength materials, which guarantees that it won’t break even if we used it in cutting, filing, or stripping tough components. It is the perfect tool for all rugged adventures.

Still, the Gerber Diesel was created with efficiency in mind. The tools on this multi tool pop and lock in place, and we were still able to access them single-handedly. The Gerber Diesel takes pride in its patented locking system that guarantees a safe use of this multi tool every time. We felt at ease using it to do the toughest handyman jobs.

Aside from doing work at home, we took the Gerber Diesel on a road trip. We camped out and spent the night outdoors. The Gerber Diesel is really an amazing multi tool. We cut twigs, small branches, strings, and ropes with it, and it performed absolutely well. We really appreciated how sturdy its build is and we were never worried that we will break it in case we cut into something really tough.

Aside from partially serrated knife and saw, the Gerber Diesel has 13 other tools. These are the needle-nose pliers, standard plier, wire cutter, jaw release button, tool lock, cross driver, large flathead driver, small flathead driver, coarse and fine file, scissors, can opener, medium flathead driver, and bottle opener. Overall, the Gerber Diesel is packaged neatly with 15 useful tools.

When not in use, we were able to keep this pocket tool nearby, thanks to its nylon ballistic-cloth sheath. If we need to carry it, we just attached the sheath on our pants through our pant’s belt buckle. It’s that easy to store it and then to get it if we needed to.

After personally using the Gerber Diesel, we felt that it is the tool for tough people out there who have their handymen work cut out for them. The Gerber Diesel is easy to use, easy to like, and can instantly be our best buddy for all the tasks we have at home or outside.

Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X

victorinox swisstool spirit best multitools 2018

Probably the most popular brand when it comes to pocket tools and pocket knives, we tried out one of its multi tools, the Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X, and we were blown away by it. If we were to describe this multi tool, it would be “extreme.” When we first saw it, we already thought that it was extremely beautiful for a pocket tool. Yet, it was extremely versatile as it offers 26 different tools in one. Moreover, the Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X is extremely small that it fits right in the palm of our hand and is extremely durable that it survived all the difficult tasks we did use it.

The Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X was designed really well. We didn’t feel any kind of discomfort while using it. We can say that it was really ergonomically designed and one-hand operation with it is easy. So, we had another hand that is free to do similar tasks to make accomplishing the task faster.

We were astounded that this small pocket tool houses 26 tools. These tools are the needle-nose pliers, wire cutter for thin and soft wire up to 40 HRC, hard wire cutter, large blade, Phillips screwdriver 1-2, punch reamer, multipurpose hook, can opener, 4-mm screwdriver, 6-mm screwdriver, 2.5-mm screwdriver, bottle opener, crate opener, wire bender, scissors, wood saw, metal saw, metal file, 7-mm chisel, wire stripper, wire scraper, cable cover longitudinal cutter, cable cover crossways cutter, and scraper. With a plethora of tools, we weren’t even able to “overuse” all of them but some of the favorites that we use all the time are the pliers, screwdrivers, scissors, and wire stripper. Although not all of the tools are often used by us, it’s good to know that they are there and are available in case we needed them.

We found it amazing the Victorinox keeps pushing the boundaries when it comes to multi tools. They don’t remain stagnant and they keep on producing newer tools to make it easier for everyone to perform DIY tasks. They made this polished yet still durable pocket tool that is perfect for stylish handymen.

We noticed that the Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X is bit heavier than the usual pocket tool but that is acceptable for us because it came with 26 amazing tools. We bet Victorinox did their best to make it as lightweight as possible without sacrificing its overall quality. Still, the Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X is a delight to work with and a big reason it made our Best Multi tool 2018 review list.

So, did we like the Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X? Hell yeah!

Leatherman Surge

Leatherman Surge Best Multi Tool 2018

If we were to describe the Leatherman Surge, it is a beast among multi tools. In the Leatherman series, this pocket tool offers a smorgasbord of tools. While other pocket tools come with 15 to 19 tools, this one has Victorinox Swisstool Spirit X compressed nicely into a single heavy-duty powerhouse that we brought everywhere we went when we were trying it out. It was extremely useful, thanks to its huge scissors, full-size knife blades, tough wire cutters, and more.

The Leatherman Surge has an all-locking feature, which made sure that when we popped out a tool, it will stay in place no matter what. We never felt worried that the tool might spring back or slip, which could have resulted to an injury. Its locking mechanism is tried and tested so we were sure that it won’t malfunction on us.

The Leatherman Surge has a lanyard ring and a nylon sheath that we attached to our pant’s belt loop. The nylon sheath protected the pocket tool when we weren’t using it and it allowed us to grab the tool quickly if we had to cut or strip something. For multi-purpose use, the Leatherman Surge offers 21 tools such as the needle-nose pliers, regular pliers, premium replaceable wire cutters, premium replaceable hard-wire cutters, stranded wire cutters, electrical crimper, wire stripper, 420HC knife, 420HC serrated knife, saw, spring-action scissors, awl with thread loop, rule (8-inch/9-cm), can opener, bottle opener, wood/metal file, diamond-coated file, blade exchanger, large bit driver, large screwdriver, and small screwdriver.

Apparently, the Leatherman Surge is the multi tool with largest pliers and longest blades in the series. So for bigger jobs, we feel that the Leatherman Surge is the ideal choice. Moreover, its easy-to-use lock systems allowed a one-handed operation to guarantee efficiency.

What we really liked with the Leatherman Surge is that it came with a blade exchanger. We seldom find a multi tool that has this although we deem it as a necessity. Since we use our pocket tools often, we usually end up having to replace the blades on our own. Its outside-opening blades is also a nifty touch and allowed us to quickly retrieve tools that we frequently used.

With a handful of tools, we expected that the Leatherman Surge to be heavier than usual. Although it was and a little bigger too, it was reasonable enough since it offered added versatility compared to other Leatherman pocket tools.

Working at home with the Leatherman Surge was great. It worked well when we had to cut through carpet and plastic. It was even able to cut through metal flashing. After being satisfied of its performance at home, it also amazed us how it fared when we used it during our camping trip. Superb!

Leatherman Wingman

Leatherman Wingman Best Multitool 2018

When we tried the Leatherman Wingman, we immediately thought why we didn’t know about this pocket tool when we were just starting out with our DIY projects. The Leatherman Wingman is the perfect companion for newbies of DIY. It offers 14 basic tools that are extremely useful for those who are just starting out. Plus, it isn’t as expensive as other multi tools so if even if for someone who is tight on the budget, this multi tool can serve as an awesome deal.

The Leatherman Wingman is equipped with 14 tools and these are the spring-action needle-nose pliers, spring-action regular pliers, spring-action wire cutters, wire stripper, 420HC combo knife, spring-action scissors, package opener, ruler (1.5-inch/3.8-cm), can opener, bottle opener, wood/metal file, Phillips screwdriver, medium screwdriver, and small screwdriver. These tools are extremely useful especially for those who are new to DIY projects. Moreover, these tools are also perfect for those who are just starting to be fond of outdoor trips like camping and hiking. Its spring-action everything (pliers, wire cutters, and scissors) brings the DIY game a notch higher.

The Leatherman Wingman doesn’t come with a sheath, however, EDC is still possible because it comes with a removable pocket clip. It is nice that it has a replaceable pocket clip just in case we needed to change the clip that it comes with. This pocket tool is small and lightweight, and with the pocket clip, it is easy to reach whenever we needed to work with it.

The Leatherman Wingman is a stainless steel pocket tool. Although it may feel less sturdy compared to the Leatherman Wave or Surge, it is still not flimsy and it didn’t break even when we used it to cut plastic or carpet. It also performed at par with other pocket tools when we took it on an overnight trip in the woods.

One-hand operation was possible with the Leatherman Wingman. Like other Leatherman multi tools, we were at ease of its trustworthy locking system. We knew how other Leatherman pocket tools work and we expected that the Leatherman Wingman is the same and it was.

Basically, this pocket tool is the best “wingman” for any project inside the house, on the jobsite, or on rugged adventures.

Gerber Legend

gerber legend best multitools 2018

What stood out when we checked out the Gerber Legend is that it has a tough stainless steel build with contoured aluminum handles and built-in tactile rubber inserts. We really appreciate this design for a folding multi tool because it makes our job a lot easier. Moreover, it doesn’t strain our hands even if we have to do tough projects that involve cutting hard materials such as plastic or metal flushing. The tactile rubber inserts on the Gerber Legend makes it truly a legend. It keeps our firm and the pocket tool steady even on the most difficult jobs.

The Gerber Legend is equipped with 12 tools namely the needle-nose pliers, semi-serrated knife, Remgrit saw, Fiskars scissors, Phillips screwdriver, small flat driver, medium flat driver, large flat driver, bottle opener, can opener, and file. These are the primary tools any DIY handyman needs so we think these are enough to get the job done.

We were really impressed with the Tungsten-Carbide steel blades on this pocket tool. Knowing that the blades on the Gerber Legend are tough, we instantly knew that they can withstand the rugged environment and perform the toughest cuts on the job. So, we were never worried especially when we brought it on a camping trip. It served us well and it made putting up tents and other camping gears a lot easier.

The Tungsten-Carbide steel blades are replaceable in case you were wondering what if they get worn out. However, Gerber claims that it is a rare occurrence for users to replace the steel blades because they are really tough.

Another thing that we liked about the Gerber Legend is its spring-loaded pliers. As such, we never felt the strain in our hand even if we used the pocket tool for a long time. Also, since it is spring-loaded, it didn’t require that it gets oiled frequently because it opens easily. However, we still recommend to oil it regularly to prevent corrosion and from locking up.

The Gerber Legend is protected by a ballistic sheath when not in use. This sheath also allowed us to EDC the pocket tool, making it a lot easier for us to reach for it when we have to. If there was a need for the Gerber Legend, we just popped open the sheath and grabbed the pocket tool inside without a hitch.

Compared to other multi tools, we can say that the Gerber Legend is affordable. We bet that you’ll also love this pocket tool like we did!

SOG S66-N PowerAssist

SOG S66-N Power Assist best multitools 2018

What is iconic on the SOG S66-N PowerAssist is that it is the first multi tool to be equipped with not just one but two SOG Assisted Technology (SAT) blades. When we tried it, we were so amazed how we can open the blades even if the pocket tool is closed. The blades are accessible even from the outside and SAT allowed us to completely open the blades without having to actually open the pocket tool. This is great especially when we needed immediate access to the blades and have to pop them open in an instant without needing the entire pocket tool to be open. When we are not using it, the blades lock in place, thanks to its patent-pending side release.

When we opened the pocket tool, we were really fond of its heavy-duty pliers and large wire cutters. These tools have made our DIY projects a lot easier to finish.

The body of the SOG S66-N PowerAssist was designed with ergonomics as a prime consideration. It has smooth handle surfaces to ensure that the pocket tool is comfortable to hold even when doing the toughest DIY projects. Cutting thick ropes and through metal flushing has become a lot easier with the SOG S66-N PowerAssist.

The SOG S66-N PowerAssist is equipped with 16 tools. These tools are the fully serrated blade, straight edge blade, bolt grip channel, bottle opener, can opener, crimper (blasting cap), three-sided file, large flat screwdriver, medium flat screwdriver, small flat screwdriver, needle-nose pliers, Phillips screwdriver, ruler, V-cutter, wire crimper, and hard-wire cutter.

Aside from its unique blades, what we also liked with the SOG S66-N PowerAssist is its sophisticated and premium build. This pocket tool handles pretty well and we really felt its sturdy build in our hands. Its heavy-duty build is perfect even for professional handymen and expert adventurers of the great outdoors. Casual users can also find the SOG S66-N PowerAssist as an ideal DIY buddy. We were never worried that it might break if we cut into something tough because the SOG S66-N PowerAssist is a lot tougher.

One-handed opening is possible with the SOG S66-N PowerAssist. Using it allowed us to have a free hand that made the job to be finished a lot faster. Its gear-driven Compounded Leverage allowed us to double the hand pressure that we applied to it when cutting and gripping. Hence, the output force to cut is stronger without having to actually apply a lot of pressure.

Out-of-box, the SOG S66-N PowerAssist came with a nylon carrying pouch so we can carry it anywhere we went.

Leatherman Skeletool CX

leatherman skeletool cx best multitools 2018

When first heard about it, we thought that the Leatherman Skeletool CX might be lacking compared to other multi tools because it only offers 7 tools in one package. However, when we saw, we realized why it only had 7 tools. The Leatherman Skeletool CX is barebones as its name suggests “Skeletool.” It is simpler compared to other pocket tools and it is extremely lightweight at only 144g.

Another reason why it is extremely lightweight aside from having only the basic tools is that its handle is made from carbon fiber. Therefore, handling this pocket tool is straightforward and virtually effortless. Still, we didn’t underestimate its carbon fiber handle into thinking that it might break when doing difficult DIY tasks. Even with firm grip, it was still comfortable to hold.

What we liked with the Leatherman Skeletool CX, even if it was barebones, is that it had a carabiner. This made it super easy to attach it on any of our bags or on our belt loop for EDC. The design of the Leatherman Skeletool CX was truly practical and they made use every side well since the carabiner doubles as a bottle opener. In addition to the carabiner, this pocket tool has a pocket clip on one side for another clip option.

The Leatherman Skeletool CX comes with a layer of protection for it sturdy body. It has a diamond-like coating (DLC) that protects it from scratches and corrosion.

The Leatherman Skeletool CX is small that we held it comfortably on one hand. Single-handed operation of the tools was easy when we tried it. The tools lock in place via a special mechanism to make sure that it is safe to use every single time. The tools can also be closed using only one hand. Checking each and every tool, the 7 tools in the Leatherman Skeletool CX are the needle-nose pliers, regular pliers, hard-wire cutters, wire cutters, 154CM knife, carabiner/bottle opener, and large bit driver.

Our favorite and main reason it made our best Multi tool 2018 review list, the 154CM knife comes pre-sharpened out-of-the-box. It is quite sharp that cutting a rope felt like cutting through butter.

Although the Leatherman Skeletool CX is basic, it can be a secondary tool for professional DIY masters and rugged outdoor adventurers. Some of us found that the basic tools on the Leatherman Skeletool CX are already enough. It is lightweight and comes in a perfect size. Its sleek design is eye-catching, which is why a lot of people still get it. Moreover, it comes at a reasonable price.

Sometimes, like in the Leatherman Skeletool CX, less is more.

Gerber Steady

gerber steady best multitools 2018

The Gerber Steady is constructed using 420J2 stainless steel, which makes it one tough multi tool. The outer coating is a dimpled polymer that made sure we always had a firm grip when using it. When fully opened, the Gerber Steady had a curved body, which is really nice especially because it made handling it ultra comfortable even if we have to use it for long hours. It may not feel as heavy-duty as other more expensive multi tools but it was designed well for its own purposes such a quick adventure or a DIY project.

When fully opened, the Gerber Steady showed its 4-in-1 pliers, which include the needle-nose on the tip, fine teeth pliers, rounded pliers, and a wire cutter. The other tools can be used with the pocket tool closed.

The stand out feature on the Gerber Steady is that it works as a tripod. On the side of the camera mount, we were able to access the 2.5-inch knife that is partially serrated (⅓ serrated and ⅔ fine). The knife came pre-sharpened and it was pretty sharp. We were able to cut ropes easily on the serrated end and we were able to sharpen branches using the fine end. However, the knife missed a locking mechanism, which was quite bothersome at times but it made up for it via what seems to be a leaf spring that snaps the tool in place.

The Gerber Steady had a screwdriver on one end and a sharp fine edge knife. It also came with a medium flat-end screwdriver and a small flat-end screwdriver, which we were also able to use as a makeshift punch.

The best feature on the Gerber Steady is the tripod mechanism. The legs of the tripod are constructed from stainless steel and protected by a layer of plastic. It has two legs located on either side of the pocket tool, which perfectly fits the notches on the sides when they are closed. In a way, the Gerber Steady has made it easier for photography enthusiasts who go on rugged adventures because now there is no need to bring a bulky camera tripod. We really liked how this feature has made taking photos on adventures a notch easier.

The Gerber Steady offers two ways to mount a camera or a smartphone. First, it has a 1-inch diameter suction cup that can handle most phones weighing up to 170g. Second, it has a screw-like mechanism for devices with a notch (pretty standard on most cameras). The screw can be found by removing the head of the suction cup. The screw mechanism can hold devices up to 340g.

For carrying, the Gerber Steady comes with a protective nylon sheath that fits nicely on any belt loop or pack.

So, if you want to take time-lapse videos or long exposure shots but bringing a full-blown photography gear is out of the question, the Gerber Steady is the perfect solution.

Bear Grylls Ultimate Multi-Tool

Bear Grylls Ultimate Multi-Tool best multitools 2018

Aptly named from the ultimate outdoor survivor, the Bear Grylls Ultimate Multi-Tool offers 12 weather-resistant stainless steel tools. We can say that these tools are truly tough and can survive any outdoor adventure that this pocket tool is brought to. Holding it in one hand is comfortable but we really felt that it was heavy-duty. The pre-sharpened blade can cut through ropes, twigs, and small branchess without any problem.

Its durable build is complemented with an ergonomic design. Its textured rubber grip made sure that it never slipped on our hands when using it. Moreover, the grip guaranteed maximum comfort even when the pocket tool is used for a long time.

The Bear Grylls Ultimate Multi-Tool is ideal for single-handed use. It is compact and lightweight enough to be held on one hand. Its tools are designed to pop out of a spring-loaded jaw and they lock in place for smooth use. We never had to worry since the tools firmly locked in place all the time.

Although the Bear Grylls Ultimate Multi-Tool only has 12 tools, we found it to be sufficient for a day-to-day use or for a quick weekend adventures. The tools on this pocket tool are the needle-nose pliers, fine-edge knife, serrated knife, saw, Phillips screwdriver, small flat driver, medium flat driver, lanyard ring, bottle opener, can opener, scissors, and wire cutters. At times, we even found these tools plentiful. Some of those that we frequently used were the screwdriver, pliers, and scissors. The lanyard ring was convenient for attaching the pocket tool on our pack.

For EDC, the Bear Grylls Ultimate Multi-Tool has a nylon sheath. This also serves as a protective cover for the pocket tool when it is not in use. Carrying the Bear Grylls Ultimate Multi-Tool was easy with this sheath. We were able to bring around cozily even on epic road trips, thanks to its nylon sheath. Plus, the sheath is mildew-resistant for added protection.

Overall, we found that the Bear Grylls Ultimate Multi-Tool is a great tool, especially for the outdoor enthusiast. It can help set-up camp in the wilderness and create tools for survival. It is compact enough that is very easy to carry around. Moreover, the materials used to create it are guaranteed to withstand any harsh environment. Additionally, we didn’t even found the need to re-sharpen or replace any blade when we were testing it out.
