Best Sea Scooters 2018

8

We are big adventurers of the open water so having a reliable sea scooter is a big deal for us. In general, most people cannot swim faster than 4 mph and aren’t likely to dive on their own more than 130 feet below sea level, and if you’re like us who enjoy exploring the depths of the sea, buying the most suitable sea scooter is your best bet. Using a sea scooter, we got fully immersed in the water – looking at coral reefs, exploring shipwrecks, and getting to know deep sea marine animals in a safe and effortless manner. If you want to experience this too, read on to find out what is the best sea scooter for you.

Sea Scooter Calypso 300

Sea Scooter Calypso 300 Best Sea Scooter 2018

The Sea Scooter Calypso 300 is one of the more basic sea scooters we have tried. With dimensions of 597 x 372 x 311 mm, we can say that this sea scooter is compact. However, it was a bit heavy weighing at about 7 kgs with the battery installed. Although we often used it when swimming in the ocean, its compact size also allowed us to play with it in a swimming pool. Even the kids enjoyed how easy and simple it is to use.

The Sea Scooter Calypso 300 has a 300-W engine inside it. This provided us with two speeds with a range between 2 mph (3 km/h) and 4 mph (6 km/h). We found that these speeds are enough to let us enjoy a quick dive in the ocean or to swim around a pool.

It doesn’t take much to operate the Sea Scooter Calypso 300. Even the kids were able to use it without a hitch. For the kids and inexperienced swimmers, the unsinkable buoyancy chamber on the Sea Scooter Calypso 300 was a nifty feature that kept the user afloat. To use the sea scooter, the user just needed to press the first trigger to start and then the second trigger to increase its power. When we wanted to dive using the Sea Scooter Calypso 300, we just removed the unsinkable buoyancy chamber and we were good to go.

Powering the Sea Scooter Calypso 300 is a battery that provides swimming time between 30 minutes and 1 hour. We were able to swim to a depth of 30 meters with this sea scooter on a single charge. Meanwhile, it takes around 6 hours to fully charge this sea scooter. What we would want is for the Sea Scooter Calypso 300 to have a battery that lasts longer than an hour so we can swim more with it and charges faster than it usually does so we don’t have to wait a long time to use it again. Although this isn’t the case, for now, our workaround was to bring extra batteries so we can alternately use and charge them. This allows us to have extended fun time with the Sea Scooter Calypso 300.

Removing and replacing the battery on the Sea Scooter Calypso 300 was pretty straightforward. There are just clips that kept the battery in place. This sea scooter has a quick release system that allowed us to take out and change the battery in a jiffy.

For safety, even though the Sea Scooter Calypso 300 seemed simple to use for the kids, it is recommended that it will only be used by individuals who are 10 years old and up.

Sea Doo Pro

SeaDooPro best sea scooters 2018

When it came to snorkeling and shallow water scuba diving, we found that the Sea Doo Pro is the best sea scooter for the job. The Sea Doo Pro has a maximum speed of 2 mph and can go up to a depth of 65 feet, which is ideal for snorkeling and shallow water scuba diving adventures. What we liked about this sea scooter is that it weighs only 13 lbs (barely 6 kgs), which makes it lightweight for a single-hand transport. Hence, beach diving has become a lot easier for us when we played with the Sea Doo Pro.

Another thing we liked with the Sea Doo Pro, making it one of the best yacht toys, is that it features an adjustable buoyancy system. For those who are new to snorkeling and shallow water scuba diving, or those who aren’t that confident yet swimming on their own in the depths of the ocean, this feature comes in handy. With the adjustable buoyancy system, we stayed afloat without a lot of effort when using this sea scooter. When we wanted to dive with it, we simply removed the buoyancy system and we were able to go underwater and maneuver it freely.

The Sea Doo Pro is truly reliable. When we used it, we were able to propel even through choppy sea currents. We saw amazing underwater marine life, thanks to the boost given by this sea scooter. Unfortunately, its battery only lasted for an hour or so, which required us to go back up immediately. If it has longer battery juice, we would have explored more of what can be found underwater.

Still, the Sea Doo Pro is a great buddy for swimming in the open sea. It has a helped a lot in preserving our energy when swimming underwater because we didn’t have to dive and propel on our own. That 2 mph boost it gave us was really helpful in making us cover more ground beneath the surface of the ocean.

Overall, the Sea Doo Pro is a reliable sea scooter especially when you need that extra boost that will help you save your energy when snorkeling or shallow water scuba diving. We would have loved it more if it had a longer battery life though.

Sea Doo – RS3

SeaDoo RS3 best sea scooters 2018

The Sea Doo – RS3 is dubbed at the next generation of best yacht toys. This sea scooter is equipped with a powerful engine that makes it capable to go to an advised depth of 130 feet (40 m), which is the advised maximum safety depth for scuba diving, and an active depth of 160 feet (50 m). Other sea scooters just allowed us to explore the surface of the water and a few feet underneath it, which we usually call us shallow water scuba diving. However, for the Sea Doo – RS3, we were able to go deeper than that but of course with professional training on our side.

Upon trying it out, we found from our experience with it that the Sea Doo – RS3 is one of the fastest sea scooters around. It propelled us to a maximum speed of 3.1 mph (about 5 km/h). Although we didn’t need that fast propulsion underwater, it was still an amazing feeling to go that fast. Other sea scooters only offered a maximum speed of up to 2 mph.

The 220 W engine of the Sea Doo – RS3 is powered by a 2.2 V Li-Ion battery. The battery of this sea scooter can go up to an hour with normal use. To charge the battery of the Sea Doo – RS3, we had to remove it from the sea scooter itself. It charges externally, which gave us the room for having extra batteries in case we wanted to keep using it while charging the other used up battery. Hence, we had more diving times, thanks to the extra batteries.

The Sea Doo – RS3 is pretty lightweight, which made it possible for us to carry it with us one hand. The carry handlebar provided us a means to have a good grip on the sea scooter before diving with it.

For inexperienced divers, they will definitely find the Sea Doo – RS3’s self-filling ballast hull for neutral buoyancy. We can say that we were already a bit experienced when it came to diving but we still enjoyed this feature when we wanted to stay afloat with spending much effort keeping our heads above water.

What we really liked with the Sea Doo – RS3 that is not pretty common with most sea scooters is that it has a mount for a GoPro. Since we enjoyed taking photos of our underwater escapades, this feature came in handy. We just mounted our GoPro in front of the carry handlebar and it easily locked in place. We never got worried that it might slip and fall off when we dive underwater because the lock was pretty tight and steady.

The Sea Doo – RS3 was designed really well. Its trigger was positioned ergonomically, which made it easy and comfortable for us to reach whenever we needed to. It has a gear-locking system that provided us with triggerless cruising. Moreover, this sea scooter has downforce spoilers that allowed us to navigate safely in a stable straight light.

We really enjoyed swimming and diving using the Sea Doo – RS3. Having it by our side just made experiencing the ocean a lot more fun.

SeaDoo SD15003 Aquaranger

SeaDoo SD15003 Aquaranger best sea scooters 2018

For newbie open sea swimmers and shallow water scuba divers, the SeaDoo SD15003 Aquaranger is one of the best choices for a sea scooter. This one is specifically designed to cater to the needs of inexperienced divers and swimmers to ensure a fun yet safe swim and dive every time. When we tried the SeaDoo SD15003 Aquaranger, we had an amazing time with it when we went out to snorkel. We also were fond of it when we took it for a quick shallow water scuba dive.

The SeaDoo SD15003 Aquaranger has a reliable engine inside it that provides a maximum speed of 2.5 mph (4 km/h). It may seem a bit slow compared to other sea scooters but that is enough for some stable cruising underwater. Also, that is a reasonable top speed to ensure a safe dive for newbies. The SeaDoo SD15003 Aquaranger has a recommended maximum depth of 30 feet (about 9 m), which is already a fun and interesting level for underwater exploration that is kept at a safe depth.

At 11.5 lbs (a little over 5 kgs), the SeaDoo SD15003 Aquaranger is light enough to enable us to carry it with a single hand. Just to be sure and safe, we carried it both hands when transporting it. When we reached our destination, we simply jumped off and started having fun with the SeaDoo SD15003 Aquaranger.

The SeaDoo SD15003 Aquaranger has a battery life of 1 hour to 1.5 hours tops. With normal use and proper charging care of the sea scooter, it can give a longer battery life. Hence, we enjoyed swimming using it and diving for a while with the SeaDoo SD15003 Aquaranger.

The SeaDoo SD15003 Aquaranger has safety features such as a safety grille, auto shut off, positive buoyancy, and dual trigger operation.

Sea Bob F5 S

SeaBob F5S best sea scooters 2018

When we first carried the Sea Bob F5 S, we immediately noticed how it was a tad heavier compared to other sea scooters designed for professional swimmers and divers. It weighed at around 75 lbs (34 kgs). Still, we liked it because its weight translated to its heavy-duty performance with its mighty engine that only provided an ultra-powerful propulsion.

The Sea Bob F5 S has an E Jet Power System that can be controlled in six gears. Unlike other sea scooters that only offer up to two gears, this bad boy does way more than that. When we increased the gear from one level to another, we really felt the power of this sea scooter. We really had a fun time driving in on the sea surface and later on diving with it. With lots of gear options, we were able to glide on the surface easily with the Sea Bob F5 S. We were also able to drive fast on water when we switched it up to maximum gear. Additionally, it just blew our minds through its performance. Every ride with this sea scooter was just amazing!

In terms of handling, we didn’t have any problem with the Sea Bob F5 S. It is perfect for use in any body of water another key reason why you find so many of these Sea Scooters used by the largest superyachts in the world.

Average running time of Sea Bob F5 S is 50 minutes to an hour. We found this more than sufficient when diving.

The Sea Bob F5 S is crafted for the sporty swimmer and diver. It doesn’t joke around when it comes to speed, power, and performance. In terms of looks, it has a matte chrome design, which just shouts a sporty demeanor.

Although this sea scooter may appear bulkier than others and it may also be heavier, we didn’t have a hard time maneuvering it on water. We enjoyed driving it in the sea and we also had an amazing time with it on a large swimming pool.

So, how much did we like the Sea Bob F5 S? We really enjoyed especially since we are adventurers when it came to diving in the ocean, in fact, its safe to say this was our top pick overall. It may be too much for someone who is just starting out and testing the waters, but anyone can drive it with enough practice. It is a fun sea scooter to drive in the sea so it can be somewhat of a goal for those who are still new to this sport.

Sea Doo – RS2

SeaDoo RS2 best sea scooters 2018

The Sea Doo – RS2 is an ergonomically designed fit for both experienced and inexperienced users. We liked so much how well-designed this sea scooter is and that its trigger is placed in a comfortable locaiton. When we tried this sea scooter, we were amazed at its intense power topping up at 3.7 mph (6 km/h). Even when we were driving it fast, the experience was buttery smooth, as if we were gliding on the surface of the water. This power was also strong enough to propel us even when we were driving against the current. This was all made possible by its 350 W engine.

The Sea Doo – RS2 has three gears, unlike other basic sea scooters that offer only two gears. Although it wasn’t a lot, we still felt the difference of the three gears. Every level provided a boost of propulsion that made every ride enjoyable. We were able to go fast without spend a lot of effort for the swim. The Sea Doo – RS2 did a lot of the work for us when swimming in the ocean.

Among the sea scooters that we’ve tried so far, the Sea Doo – RS2 offered one of the longest battery lifespans. We were able to use it intensely for up to an hour and 15 minutes on a single charge. The battery on the Sea Doo – RS2 is Li-Ion, which is more environment-friendly compared to other types of battery.

We took the Sea Doo – RS2 for scuba diving and its recommended maximum depth is up to 130 feet (40 m). It worked well in the open sea but we also had a great time when we used it in the swimming pool. Although using it in the pool might mean not maximizing its capability, this can be a good way for beginners to practice before actually diving in the ocean.

To stay afloat, the Sea-Doo – RS2 has a one of a kind self-filling ballast hull for neutral buoyancy.

Sea Doo – GTI

SeaDoo GTI best sea scooters 2018

After experiencing the Sea-Doo – GTI, we can say that this sea scooter is not your regular basic sea scooter. It is not created to just be used in a swimming pool. It is designed to let you get fully immersed in the ocean. As a perfect gear for snorkeling and/or diving, the Sea Doo – GTI really provided that boost we needed to propel on the surface of the water and even underwater. The Sea Doo – GTI has an engine that gives a boost of up to 2.5 mph (4 km/h). Its maximum depth is rated at 100 feet (30.5 m). It is one of the best sea scooters in the market for scuba diving, snorkeling, and other water sports.

What astounded us is that even if the Sea Doo – GTI has a powerful engine, the unit was pretty light at 18 lbs (8 kgs). Hence, we were still able to transport it with just one hand. We expected it to wear a little more heavier than that so it was really amazing to know that it didn’t.

Another amazing thing with the Sea Doo – GTI is that its battery life can last up to 2 hours. Most sea scooters have battery power that offers a running time of an hour or a little over an hour. This one allowed us to enjoy the ocean twice longer than any other sea scooter.

In terms of safety precaution, even if the Sea Doo – GTI is geared more towards experienced divers, beginners can still enjoy without worrying that they might sink if used improperly because it has an adjustable buoyancy control. This feature keeps the unit and the user afloat without a lot of effort.

Another safety feature on the Sea Doo – GTI is that it has a waterproof shell. This ensures that the internal circuitry of the sea scooter will not get wet especially when there is accidental flooding or inflow of water.

Overall, the Sea Doo – GTI is a complete package, making it one of the best sea scooters around. It is powerful, has amazing battery life, and has lots of safety features, which makes it also a great sea scooter even for those who are just starting out.

Seabob F5

Seabob F5 best seascooters 2018

One of the sea scooters that we liked testing out is the Seabob F5. This is the best sea scooter if you require heavy duty performance. When we tried it out, we experienced intense pleasure in the water. Whether driving it on the surface of the water or underwater, this is definitely one of the best yacht toys around.

When we used the Seabob F5, we really felt how agile it was. Maneuvering it was never a problem for a sea scooter that weighs 64 lbs (29 kgs).

As we’ve said, we really enjoyed the heavy-duty performance of the Seabob F5. This was made possible by its E-Jet Power System. This system is super environment-friendly and guarantees zero emission in every drive. We’ve learned that the E-Jet Power System works based on the principle of water displacement. So, when the water is sucked in by its motor, it is forced out under high pressure. This unique drive mechanism makes it a powerful toy in the water. Aside from being environment-friendly, this system also guarantees that its operating cost is kept at a minimum.

In a way, driving the Seabob F5 made us feel that there are no boundaries in sea scooters. It’s really fun and we experienced absolute freedom when we were at sea with it. Although we enjoyed it best in the open water, we also had fun with it on a swimming pool complex.

We also liked that the Seabob F5 is ergonomically designed, which allowed control of it a lot easier. It has a ControlGrip that allowed us to easily regulate the speed so moving from one to gear to the other is just on a push of a button away.

Overall, after getting to the Seabob F5 and becoming familiar with it, we can say that it is advanced in all aspects. This high-tech sea scooter offers everything in cutting-edge quality. The vehicle is crafted from premium carbon elements. Moreover, it is coated with ceramic and precious metals, which makes it extremely resistant to salt water. The whole unit is built with the care that never compromises quality. We really felt this with every drive so we were always at ease when using it.

A minor setback on this sea scooter is its running time. Its battery life only lasts barely an hour so that’s a very limited time to play with it. Moreover, charging time is whopping 8 hours. So, we would want it to have longer run time and shorter charging time.

Sea Doo supercharged Plus VS

SeaDoo supercharged Plus VS Best 2018

The Sea-Doo supercharged Plus VS pushed our diving experience to a whole new level. We had fun with this ultra-powerful high-end sea scooter when we went out with it for snorkeling and scuba diving. Its top speed reaches up to 3 mph (about 5 kph), which made up for a smooth ride underwater. On the water, it allowed us to nicely glide on the surface and its engine is powerful enough to propel us even when we’re going against the current.

A nice touch on the Sea Doo supercharged Plus VS is that it now features a reinforced nose cone. This ensures that the drive unit is protected when transporting it and when using it in rugged environments.

After knowing that this sea scooter was rated Number 1 by Diving Science and Technology (DSAT) in terms of ultimate dive propulsion, we were further blown away by it. We really had an amazing time diving using the Sea Doo supercharged Plus VS. Meanwhile, when we had to stay afloat, its removable buoyancy control chamber came in handy.

When it comes to safety features, the Sea Doo supercharged Plus VS is topnotch. The drive unit has a two-stage seal waterproof construction to make sure that water is contained outside only. It also prevents leaks that can damage the circuity of the sea scooter. A new feature on the Sea Doo supercharged Plus VS is its impact-resistant rubber protection. Hence, it can survive easily even in rough waters. The unit has an auto-shutoff feature that shuts down the unit when the trigger is released. This is another safety feature of the sea scooter.

The Sea Doo supercharged Plus VS is still relatively light. Weighing about 18 lbs (about 8.2 kgs), transport of this sea scooter was pretty easy.

The Sea-Doo supercharged Plus VS has a running time of 1.5 hours. This is quite a long running time compared to other sea scooters. So, we can say that it is better in terms of battery life overall. Although a bit short for most adrenaline water junkies, it is still way more than what other sea scooters can offer.

A nice touch with this package is that you can buy it with a stylish carry bag to make transporting it even better. For added safety, it also has a very comprehensive manual that we thoroughly read before we took it for a dive in the sea.

Yamaha RDS200

Yamaha RDS200 best sea scooters 2018

The Yamaha RDS200 is an easy-to-use sea scooter when you want to drive on water and when you want to dive underwater. This sea scooter has a reliable engine that propelled us to a maximum speed of 2 mph (about 3.2 km/h). It allowed us to dive to depths reaching up to 65 feet (about 20 km) where we explored interesting marine life.

On normal use, we were able to play with the Yamaha RDS200 for up to an hour. Most sea scooters offer battery life like this so we can say that it is pretty at par the general options. Still, we’d like to have a sea scooter with longer battery life than that whenever possible. The ocean offers a lot of space to be explored so we really like to have a sea scooter with a bigger battery capacity.

The Yamaha RDS200 gets its power from a Sealed Lead Acid Battery. This type of battery requires occasional maintenance.

The Yamaha RDS200 sports a removable buoyancy control chamber to help the user stay afloat.

Compared to other sea scooters, we can say that the Yamaha RDS200 is relatively light. It weighs 13 lbs (6 kg), which allowed us to transport it even using one hand only. This means that the Yamaha RDS200 is easy to bring in road trips to the beach.

Unfortunately, the Yamaha RDS200 doesn’t have a GoPro mount so we found it challenging when we wanted to take pictures especially underwater. If you are a marine photography enthusiast, you might have a hard time having a stable means to take photos. There are other sea scooters that offer such, which might be better options for you.

The Yamaha RDS200 is designed well for recreational swimming and diving.

Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2

Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2 best sea scooters 2018

We found that the Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2 is a standout sea scooter especially in terms of battery life. This is probably the best sea scooter if you want to swim and dive for longer hours in the open water. The Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2 boasts a maximum battery life of up to 190 minutes (2 hours and 10 minutes) with normal use. When played with it in the sea, we reached close to that claimed battery life. We were already tired with swimming and diving before this sea scooter ran out of battery juice. It was just amazing!

Aside from battery life, another thing we really liked about the Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2 is its sporty look. Unlike other sea scooters, this one has a hands-free saddle for a hands-free ride. It is also equipped with a 262 W high-efficiency brushless motor that provides optimum power for a smooth ride. With its more powerful motor, the Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2 gave us 10% increase in torque compared to the regular AV-2 sea scooter.

The Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2 boasts an average cruising range in open water of 2.25 to 4.5 miles (about 3.6 to 7.2 km). It is rated with a continuous cruise time in open water between 70 and 110 minutes. Basically, it maximum run time can go over an hour. Hence, we had a bit of longer time to explore the open water compared to most sea scooters whose batteries can barely last an hour. Maximum runtime with normal use is between 80 and 190 minutes. That’s superb battery life if you ask us.

The Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2 offers a variable speed trigger with its three-speed propeller. Its progressive acceleration system is fun to use and we really felt the change in speed on every level. We were able to propel quickly yet in a stable way underwater. Above water, driving it felt like we were just gliding by even when we were going against the current.

The Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2 is rated with a maximum depth of 230 feet (about 70 m). We explored underwater up to that depth and we had no problems with it. The hands-free saddle really came in handy when we were a bit tired but we still wanted to use it.

In terms of size, the Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2 has dimensions of 28.5 x 13.5 inches. This permitted to easily carry and transport it around.

We checked the safety features on the Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2 and we found a handful. Hence, even if this sea scooter was made for experienced divers, it is still safe to use for newbies. Its safety features include thermal switch protection that automatically shuts down the drive unit before it overheats, heat radiation protection via aluminum gear case and plate, overcurrent detection that shuts off the drive unit, and LED battery life indicator so we’d easily know when it’s time to swim back home. Moreover, the drive unit is made of shock-resistant ABS resin, which guarantees that it will survive even in rough environments.

The Apollo AV-2 Evolution 2 is really easy to like and with its unique appearance, it made a mark in our mind after we tried it. We’d love to give it a try again and it is one of the best yacht toys we consider getting. It’s just a complete setup with all the things we want the best sea scooter to have.

Seabob Cayago Magnum

Seabob Cayago Magnum best sea scooters 2018

The Seabob Cayago Magnum is a limited edition sea scooter with a price tag to match. So, after trying it out, we can say that we are really lucky to be able to take this water ride for a spin. By just looking at it, we can already say that it is not short than premium. It’s not like the other sea scooters we’ve tried that came with exposed propellers or a little bit flimsy build, the Seabob Cayago Magnum is the real deal.

As we’ve mentioned, the Seabob Cayago Magnum is limited edition. Apparently, only 100 units of this sea scooter were made so getting your hands on one can be extremely challenging and very expensive.

Under its hood, the Seabob Cayago Magnum is powered by Seabob’s patented electric jetstream system. This provides a strong and unique propulsion without compromising stability. Hence, driving it underwater is smooth and easy, and maneuvering it is virtually trouble-free. On the surface of the water, we were also able to try driving it and it was fun. Although it isn’t fun as its underwater use, it was still capable of providing a nice ride on the surface.

When it comes to controlling the Seabob Cayago Magnum, we found it simple and straightforward. Even a newbie won’t have a hard time controlling it although you may want to have lots of practice first before investing in a toy like this. The Seabob Cayago Magnum has a pair of intelligent control Powergrips and with just one push of a sensor button, the drive unit accelerated to the speed that we wanted.

When driving it, we were faced with an LCD display panel that we didn’t commonly see in other sea scooters. The display showed us technical real-time information of the sea scooter such as battery life, power, temperature of the water, and depth of the dive. In a way, we easily knew everything happening with the drive unit and with our dive.

The Seabob Cayago Magnum is really an advanced piece of machinery. We used its latest compass technology when we explored underwater. It allowed us to safely navigate under the sea at reasonable speeds and even with poor visibility.

The Seabob Cayago Magnum is constructed from heavy-duty materials that made it perfect for underwater adventures up to 130 feet (about 40 m). Exploring under the sea has become more exhilarating with this amazing sea scooter.

However, what the Seabob Cayago Magnum lacked was a mount for an underwater camera. If you are an avid GoPro user and likes taking photos under the sea, this sea scooter doesn’t provide a stable base to install your GoPro. Instead, you’ll still need to find an accessory where you can install your camera.
